From technology to pilot to changing the world

I recently was impressed by an idea presented by Andreas Raptopoulos (Matternet) that could really revolutionize the way physical materials will be transported in the future.
From a business perspective, it has the potential to replace traditional postal services and FedEx type services and even the pizza delivery service by a completely automated transport system through the air using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.  Very impressive.
If you haven't seen it yet, check out the video.
"Andreas Raptopoulos is the founder and CEO of Matternet, launching a new paradigm for transportation using a network of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles."

But, to me the most disturbing was  that although I was aware of the technology (I had seen videos like the one below), I had not seen how this technology can be applied in a way it may change our world of transport completely.

"Experiments performed with a team of nano quadrotors at the GRASP Lab, University of Pennsylvania. Vehicles developed by KMel Robotics. "

That bags the question:
How do people make the link?  Do they start from the technology and see the applicability of it, or do they start from a real world problem and find technology solutions for that?  What do you think?
